Great Start Montcalm

Parent Coalition Minutes

Chemical Bank, Stanton, Michigan

January 5, 2010

Present:  Susan Sunden, Jyll Mitchell, Lisa Lund, Mary Peterson, Brenda Greenhoe, Mishawn Zudweg

1.       Welcome!  Introductions!

2.       Position Changes in Great Start Collaborative.  Susan Sunden announced that she would be taking over the Director position and that Mishawn Zudweg would now be the new Parent Liaison.  Mishawn introduced herself to the PC and shared a little of her background w/ them.

3.       Literacy Project, Book Drive:  Discussion immediately began regarding the book drive.  Mary Peterson plans to chair this event.  We discussed the age group that we would like to target.  It was determined by the group ages 12 and under would be our focus.  We also discussed which types of books we’d like to collect during the book drive and we decided to use the wording “New & Gently Used Books” posted at all sites as well as the age range description (0-12 yrs).  Mary Peterson prepared a flyer prior to the meeting & distributed a copy to the PC for review.  With the position changes, updating will need to take place.  We also decided to do a 2-month book drive; March 1 – April 30th.  The PC agreed that the flyer is looking good & about ready to be finalized.  We also discussed putting systems into place regarding the drop boxes, coordinators at each collection site, who will pick up the books, the sorting & distribution of the books to the recipients (baby pantries, 1st Baptist Read & Sing, etc.).  The PC decided that we would like to only do the drive at the Chemical Bank locations for the 1st year.  We could expand this initiative next year to include local schools if this proves to be a successful event.  Also discussed was the possibility of running an “ad” with local newspapers (Daily News, River Valley, Area Happenings).  We did, however, feel that a flyer to local schools would be appropriate promoting the drop off sites at Chemical Bank.  Posting the final flyer regarding the Book Drive within our local communities is also an option.  We decided that May 4th would be the date we would sort & apply GSC labels to prepare for distribution.  Susan Sunden & Mishawn Zudweg will then deliver the books personally to the recipients.

4.       Parent Leadership Training:  Susan Sunden introduced the Parent Leadership training that will be available on Feb. 9th in Newaygo Co.  Additional information will be provided to the PC as it becomes available.

5.       Mom 2 Mom Sale:   Lisa Lund is chairing this event.  Discussed were the parameters about items that could be sold; liability issues or disclaimers.  Perhaps a clothes swap instead of “sale.”  Parent 2 Parent OR Family 2 Family Clothes Swap was proposed.  This could be a community-based event where we would partner will or support a possible event that is already scheduled, i.e., Back to School Event, etc.  Focus on who is doing Back to School Events.  PC members discussed putting “feelers” out in our local communities.  Lisa Lund will contact per Pastor Groups.  Mishawn Zudweg/Susan Sunden will work on contacting principals/administrative personnel at our local schools to find out if there are events scheduled; when, where, etc.  Another idea that was thrown out was a PJ Drive or Jammie Drive.

6.       Susan Sunden announced that we would be presenting the Sleds that were signed at the Sledding Event on Dec. 29th at the Legislative Luncheon the end of January.  We would like as many parent representatives to attend to give a strong support in this effort.

Next East Side PC Meeting:  Feb. 2, 2010, Chemical Bank, Stanton, Michigan.  Please RSVP!

Respectfully Submitted,
