Great Start Montcalm Parent Coalition Minutes Chemical Bank, Stanton, Michigan March 2, 2010 Present: Jyll Mitchell, Lisa Lund, Mary Peterson, Mishawn Zudweg 1. Welcome! 2. Walk for Warmth: Mishawn reported on the results of our soup booth at W4W in Greenville. We touched 50-75 people, made great contacts & enjoyed delicious soup as well as raising money for families who need funds for heat! 3. Sledding Event: Mishawn shared that the sleds that were signed by parents during our Sledding Event on Dec. 29th were presented to the legislators at the Legislative Luncheon on Monday, Feb. 22nd. Sue gave a short presentation to the attendees regarding Great Start and we were able to get a photo w/ Sen. Cropsey and Ed Windover, Rep. Huckleberry’s Aide. Sue & Mishawn plan to submit a press release regarding the event’s success & the presentation. 4. Literacy Project, Book Drive Update: Mary Peterson is chairing this event. Boxes have been placed in all locations. Mary P. will drop off a box at GR Ophthalmology in Greenville as one additional site. The ISD is also collecting books. The Buzz ran a story about the Book Drive on March 1, 2010. Visit http://www.myareabuzz.com/ and click on the bottom left hand side where it says “Click below to launch the Buzz - Montcalm edition”. Mishawn will mail the West Side PC to collect books at our next PC meeting on March 23rd. Mary & Lisa both said that they would deliver flyers to 4-6 child care centers in the county. This effort is two-fold: 1st the parents of the child care children are a good source for books, and 2nd, these parents should also be notified that the books from the book drive will be available in the local baby pantries in May. Mishawn will gather information at the next Literacy meeting (March 10th) about a possible mailing to some of the larger child care centers in Montcalm County. This mailing would include a flyer as well as a letter explaining our book drive & how they care help & how we can help them. 5. Parent Leadership Training: Parent Leadership training is available on March. 9th (rescheduled from Feb. 9th) in Newaygo Co. from 5:30 to 7:30 pm for those who would like leadership training & empowerment. This training is presented by ECIC. RSVP to Mishawn Zudweg ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ). Lisa Lund & Mary Peterson may attend. 6. Back to School/Winter Weather Wear Drive: Lisa Lund is chairing this idea. Mishawn reported her responses from the email to all elementary principals in the county. At this time, Lisa received 3 responses from faith-based group, and Mishawn received only 1 response from the principals. After some discussion, the group decided that they did not want to take the lack of response as a lack of need or interest. So, Lisa Lund will be attending the next Principals Meeting in April. She will report back to the PC at our May meeting. At that time this activity can be explored further. In addition, we plan to separate this idea into two different activities; Back to School and Winter Weather Wear (i.e., Coat drive). 7. Food Truck Information: There was discussion amongst the group about getting information onto the Master Calendar regarding Food Truck deliveries. Mishawn will explore some contacts & gather more information for next month. 8. Awards/Community Event: Mary Peterson & Lisa Lund suggested an awards-type event perhaps piggy-backed on some other events in the community (Old Fashioned Days or MCC We Care for Kids). Mary shared interest in helping coordinate such an event. Mishawn reported to the GSC Executive Board & Sue will be in contact with Mary regarding this idea. 9. STAR Power: Mishawn introduced the information regarding Star Power. The date is set for May 19th. Specific details yet to come. Please begin to check your calendars and let Mishawn or Sue know if you can attend this event.
